HydroContest by ENSM 2026: When Maritime Innovation Becomes a Collective Adventure

HydroContest by ENSM 2026 brought together students, industry professionals and researchers from five different nationalities around maritime innovation, international cooperation and the decarbonization of maritime transport. Looking back on a first edition driven by the commitment of younger generations and the power of collective intelligence.

From 28 to 30 April 2026, Marseille's Florence Arthaud Nautical Stadium hosted the first edition of HydroContest by ENSM.


For three days, students, teachers, researchers, industry representatives, institutions, school groups, members of the public and maritime enthusiasts gathered around a common objective: to imagine and test solutions capable of addressing the environmental and energy challenges facing maritime transport today.


Beyond the figures, trophies and technical performances, this first edition demonstrated something essential: transitions are never achieved alone.


A Competition, But Above All a Human Adventure


Ten student teams representing five different nationalities spent months designing, building and defending their projects.


On the docks, in workshops, on the water and before the juries, the students demonstrated far more than technical skills. They learned how to collaborate, solve complex problems, overcome unexpected challenges and work in multicultural environments where exchanges naturally crossed borders.


Throughout the competition, languages, cultures and backgrounds blended with remarkable ease. French, Turkish, Colombian, Brazilian and Latvian students exchanged ideas around prototypes, technical solutions and potential improvements.


This spirit of openness and cooperation undoubtedly stands as one of HydroContest's greatest achievements.

Preparing the Agents of Change


The energy transition of maritime transport is one of the major challenges of the 21st century.


Decarbonizing an industry responsible for more than 80% of global trade requires technological innovation, but also women and men capable of imagining, testing and implementing these solutions.


This is precisely what HydroContest makes possible.


By providing students with a full-scale experimental environment, the competition allows them to confront their theoretical knowledge with the technical, economic and operational realities of the maritime sector.


Designing an eco-efficient vessel, improving the energy performance of an existing ship, presenting a project before an international jury or collaborating with industry professionals are all experiences that prepare future engineers, officers, naval architects and maritime specialists for the challenges ahead.

Cooperation: A Necessity in the Face of Climate Challenges


The environmental challenges facing maritime transport are immense.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency, developing new propulsion systems, optimizing routes and using more sustainable materials: no single solution will be enough to achieve international objectives on its own.


Innovation must be collective.


This is why events such as HydroContest play an essential role today. They create a space where students, researchers, industry professionals and institutions can meet, exchange ideas and work together on the solutions required for the energy transition of maritime transport.


The discussions held during the HydroDays, professional networking sessions, round tables and the Retrofit Challenge all highlighted the importance of bringing together every stakeholder within the maritime ecosystem.


The energy transition will not result from competition between organizations. It will emerge from cooperation between generations, professions and countries.


An International Dynamic Looking Ahead


his first edition also confirmed the growing interest of higher education institutions around the world in maritime decarbonization and, more broadly, in the development of environmentally responsible solutions.


Today, this reflection is becoming central within engineering schools: what will be the environmental, economic and societal consequences of what we design?


The participating teams brought different approaches, methods and perspectives, significantly enriching both the technical discussions and the human experience.

Bringing together teams from several countries, the on-water challenges highlighted the diversity of technical approaches and the students' ability to tackle maritime transition challenges together.

This diversity is one of HydroContest's greatest strengths.


Faced with global challenges, the solutions must also be global. Innovations developed in engineering schools in Medellín, Istanbul, Riga, Brest or Marseille can inspire and advance the entire sector.


By bringing these talents together around a shared challenge, HydroContest contributes to the emergence of a new generation of professionals who understand environmental issues and are capable of working beyond borders.


A Promising First Edition


With more than 900 public visitors, nearly 800 pupils and accompanying adults welcomed during the educational day on 29 April, more than 100 companies and partners involved, and 250 students participating across the different components of the event, HydroContest by ENSM 2026 demonstrated the relevance of its model.


But the most important achievement lies elsewhere.


For three days, young people from different backgrounds shared their ideas, skills and enthusiasm to build practical solutions together.


At a time when the energy transition of maritime transport has become a necessity, this ability to cooperate, experiment and share knowledge appears more valuable than ever.

Behind every prototype, every retrofit study and every round table discussion stood a shared conviction: the future of the maritime sector will be shaped by collective intelligence, innovation and the commitment of new generations.


And this is precisely the ambition that HydroContest by ENSM will continue to carry forward in the years to come.
